Profile: Chemistry teacher Ms. Fiero inspires a love for science

Ms. Fiero is a teacher at Diego Rivera and she teaches chemistry, intro art and forensic science. When she was younger, she was a bit of a rebel and was born in a religiously strict household in the middle of nowhere Utah. She grew up on a farm. Her family was on the poor side.

She would run around with her 12 older brothers seeing what they could get into. She loved riding horses, cooking, art, soccer, baseball and four wheelers.

She always wanted to be someone in her life. Growing up with little money and then her early teen years discovering how difficult it is to be a woman that is respected, she knew she wanted to make a positive impact. She found herself not able to stay in Utah and moved to California. She lived in her car for the 1st year in Long Beach and attended community college. She loved science; the way it explained the world around her yet at the same time enlightened her to new questions. She got her degree in chemical engineering where she moved into the field. She worked for JPL, SpaceX, Praxair and Biophase Solutions INC. She saw the corruption of the industry and she wanted to make a better impact so she decided she would try to inspire young people to stop the corruption.

During distance learning, she did not adjust well. Ms. Fiero says she is a vocal complainer. She felt every day like she let the kids down not being able to give them everything they deserve. She has made it through with the kindness of her students and the two best kitties in the world. She tries everyday to make the content interesting or at the very least make a joke to put a smile on her students’ faces. They are her reason to continue and never give up.

I am amazed by the life she went through to get to where she is now, a person like makes me feel like anything is possible and anything can be done one way or another, she is very kind hearted and I wish her the best in life.
