Meet CATS’ New Principal Mr. Gosselin

CATS welcomed a new principal, Mr. Sean Gosselin, this school year.
He shared his plans for the school and identified some of the school’s strengths and some things that need to be improved.
“The first thing that I saw when I came in was the team. So the team of teachers and the outside staff was just awesome,” he said.
Ms. Grace McCullough, history and lead teacher at CATS, was part of the team that selected the new principal, which included other teachers, students and administrators. She had been working with the previous principal, Dr. Cynthia Gonzalez, for around four years and had developed a good relationship with her, but she is looking forward to this transitional phase.
“Mr. Gosselin is very organized and really comes to our school with an open mindset. He’s told us he really wants to get to know us, see if we need anything and figure out how he can support us in any way, and I think that’s also what Dr. G wanted,” she said. “They both want us to have a kind of fresh outlook on ourselves.”
Mr. Gosselin moved here from Hamilton High School in the Westside of Los Angeles. Before Hamilton High school, he was an assistant principal at Panorama High School in Panorama City. Mr. Gosselin was an interim principal at Hamilton from August to October 2021, so this year is actually his first time being a full-time principal. He is originally from Montreal, Canada.
Irvin M., a junior, said he met the principal on the first day on the job.
“I consider him as a normal principal and a very energetic guy,” he said. “He’s very good at conversation and makes people smile and very good at saying hello to a lot of people. He seems like the right person to take care of this school and is ahead of his game.”
Irvin has already noticed some of the changes he has made around the school. “For obvious reasons, the hall pass now changed and you have to be back in class on time and if you forgot to sign the chart you can get absent, which is what I like,”he said. “That way not a lot of students miss class or do anything to waste teacher time.”
According to Mr. Gosselin, one of the problems at CATS is “that there is that group of students that just wander off and don’t go to classes.” He wants to work on that and have every student be in class.
Ms. Grace noticed that he is really passionate about tardiness and getting students into their classrooms so they can really do their best. Some of these changes even happen in her classroom. She notices there are less students out and that there is more accountability.
Mr. Gosselin also said one of his plans for CATS is “to increase the attendance because there’s a lot of problems with the attendance.” He wants students to be on time for class and ready to learn. Mr. Gosselin also wants more communication between administration and the teachers.
“What I expect for the new principal is to change the way CATS is and make sure that he knows what he’s doing and handling situations when things get out of hand,” said Irvin. “I hope that he can plan fun stuff for everyone and make them feel welcome.”

Mr. Gosselin said he would like to have more technology classes offered at CATS, such as computer programming. This is something he is trying to work on and find partners in the community to have access to different services.
There might be differences between the old and new principal. Ms. Grace responded to this saying “There’s some different styles between them you know, they’re very different. Dr. G had these familiar relationships with the staff and teachers. And I believe Mr. Gosselin doesn’t want to jump into something, so I’ve noticed he is taking his time, getting familiar, and trying to get to know us all better.”
“I feel like they’re both energetic and made well for the job of being principal. However I do see a change where he’s more strict,” Irvin said. “I know Dr. G brought a lot of good stuff for students. Which is good, but I think if the new principal does this, it would make a lot of difference in the school.”

Según Mr. Gosselin, uno de los problemas en CATS es “que hay un grupo de estudiantes que simplemente se desvían y no van a clases”. Quiere trabajar en eso y que todos los estudiantes estén en clase.
Ms. Grace notó que le apasionan las tardanzas y lograr que los estudiantes entren a sus salones de clases para que realmente puedan hacer lo mejor que puedan. Algunos de estos cambios incluso ocurren en su salón de clases. Ella nota que hay menos estudiantes fuera y que hay más responsabilidad.
Mr. Gosselin también dijo que uno de sus planes para CATS es “aumentar la asistencia porque hay muchos problemas con la asistencia”. Quiere que los estudiantes lleguen a tiempo a clase y listos para aprender. Mr. Gosselin también quiere más comunicación entre la administración y los maestros.
