Manga Review: ‘One Piece’ is totally worth it
By Jazmine A.
“One Piece” is a manga series that has caused many to get enthusiastic over its next chapter. What is the source of excitement for ¨One Piece,” which has sold 500 million copies worldwide?
When watching “One Piece,” there is a certain feeling of anticipation for what the main character Monkey D. Luffy, his crew, and their allies will accomplish next, and whether or not they´ll be able to reach their goal and defeat certain enemies out at sea. The manga itself has been going on since 1997 and is still to this day in progress. It’s the best selling manga of all time and was in the Guinness Book of World Records for “most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.”
“One Piece” follows the life of a young aspiring pirate by the name of Monkey D. Luffy who unintentionally ate a Devil Fruit which made his body gain powers at a young age. Having been raised in an era full of pirates, his main goal is to become the next Pirate King and to become the freest one among everyone else. As he gathers people for his crew, Luffy and the rest of The Straw Hat Pirates set out to sea in search for the famous and the most valuable treasure known as the One Piece, which was left behind by Gol D. Roger, the former Pirate King.
I used to tell myself I wouldn’t get into “One Piece” due to it being really long. However, when I started to watch it, I started to believe that maybe watching all those episodes wouldn’t be so bad. At first I didn’t have much time to watch it so I’d only be able to watch a bit whenever I´d be able to. Once I was able to watch more and really get into the storytelling, you better believe I´d watch as much as I could.
“One Piece” has to be one of my favorite anime. The characters, the plot, the designs, and the animation are all amazing. First off, the characters and their backstories are well written. When these characters are introduced they are usually introduced in a way in which they sometimes don’t elaborate much, so they keep you guessing. Once elaborated on, the characters add more to the context of the story. The way the characters and their backstories are written gives them this sense of realism where it’s not just them being straight-up serious, tough, or perfect; they are flawed at times and make mistakes. Each character equally shows their weaknesses throughout the show along with their strengths. The characters aren’t written as bland, each character has some sort of depth to them causing them to be more likable, which is something crucial to a story so that the audience can either relate or feel attached to the characters.
“One Piece” is one of the few times in which the main character is one of my favorite characters. I usually tend to like side characters more due to the way in which they are usually written to have more depth and life, but this show is different. Monkey D. Luffy is usually having a good time. Occasionally, he acts serious but most of the time he is doing his own thing. His character is amazing. One of Luffy’s best traits is that he has accepted the fact that he is not strong on his own and, therefore, needs the help of others in order to succeed in his goal. It’s a nice detail because when helping others, Luffy desires for others to accept the fact that they, indeed, do need his help. An example of this would be when he decided to help Nami defeat the Arlong Pirates once she finally admitted that she needed help.
He is very determined to become the next pirate king, and this story line is done in a way that isn’t obnoxious. Monkey D. Luffy is portrayed as a very joyous character, as well as very empathetic with others as shown multiple times throughout the show.
Although he is often portrayed as a bit silly, he is always happy – and there are times where he encounters harships that he must face seriously. Back in the Marineford arc, before timeskip, where he faced a tragedy which affects him dearly, he decides that he and his crew must train and become better. He had the realization that he can’t defeat everything in the Grand Line and if he remains the way he is, he won’t be strong enough to defeat stronger enemies out there in the Grand Line and protect the ones he cares about. The way his character is written adds a sense of light to the show. As I mentioned, I´m not someone who tends to like the main characters, but he is an exception.
The storyline and plot is something I enjoy a lot as well. The way in which the cast of characters end up embarking on adventures every couple of episodes keeps me entertained and helps me not lose focus on the anime.
“One Piece” is based on each character chasing their dreams but the moral of the story is not individualism: it shows how, despite having different goals, you can come together and join forces in order to achieve what you want.
The show presents various references as well as powerful themes. The plot of “One Piece” is well thought-out and not just written along the way of its creation. Many people don’t give “One Piece” a try either because of its length in episodes or because of its childish appearance. However, “One Piece” isn’t as light hearted as it seems; it usually deals with things such as human trafficking, racism, hierarchy, and other important issues. . As the art style is cartoonish and silly it aids in making it not as serious, and more probable for people of all ages to enjoy. I personally like the artstyle I find it very enjoyable. It is a shonen manga therefore some of the troupes following said manga category will be in “One Piece” as well. Shonen manga is manga that is usually targeted towards a young male audience, which is usually typically characterized by action-filled plots. Along with its storyline the fights presented to the reader are executed well. There are times where some fights are a little long but not too long. When watching the anime at times, it would be better to just read the manga due to the pacing being a little off at times.
“One Piece” is a must watch show. It is by far one of my favorite anime. I have never been as hooked to a long anime as I have with this series. Most times I tend to drop the show or like to leave it to watch for later. It is totally worth your time due to it having great written characters, a well-written plot, and cool fights. If you like pirates or shonen manga, you will also like “One Piece.”
