The AP/Honors Society Club at CATS hosted a fundraiser at a Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and Restaurant in Huntington Park during the first week of December to raise money for student recognition.

Math teacher and GATE Coordinator Ms. Nava said the fundraiser as a whole was a huge success.

“I feel very happy and delighted that it turned out very very good,” she said, sharing that the event took a lot of effort and commitment from the AP/ Honors Society Club members.

“There was a lot of back planning with [History teacher] Ms. Haagen and myself getting donations, right, spreading the word, getting the certificates ready, so there was a lot of work put into it and it showed the day of,” she said.

The fundraiser raised over $400, according to Ms. Nava.

“The Shakey’s manager personally told me that only Huntington Park High School, which is roughly about 2,000 students, could raise that amount of money,” she said.

Senior Cris Z. says fundraisers like this can benefit herself and other students taking AP Courses.

“It helps fundraise for activities such as the awards ceremony and I feel like as a student, that motivates me to do really good in class,” she said.

Furthermore, Jhonny D. felt the fundraiser was very fulfilling and enjoyed it, saying that “it allows for fun experience for AP students to come together.”

The AP/Honors Society Club at CATS fundraiser was not only hosted to raise money to better recognize students taking on hard challenges academically, but also to give students a fun experience with a lot of incentives.

There were many raffles hosted throughout the event which let AP and Honors students enjoy the night with friends, family and prizes.

Ms. Nava said, “I was excited that the students were excited to win those prizes such as 2 new guitars, right, like the funko pops, and getting those Bath and Body Works, but also those Northgate vouchers for groceries.”

AP classes are not required courses but are courses students can opt to take in order to better prepare themselves for college.

Ms. Nava believes students taking AP classes are doing themselves well.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to be exposed to college rigors,” she said.

Students taking AP classes have an opportunity to learn how to study and produce work at the college level.

Cris Z. said, “I think that AP classes are really fundamental for your learning because they help you get a better understanding of, like, college level work.”

Jhonny D. also believes AP classes can be beneficial to students, saying, “it gives them a boost in their GPA and helps them understand college level work.”

The fundraiser at Shakey’s was made possible by the help of the AP/Honors Society Club at CATS and many other staff’s help.

Cris Z. believes more fundraisers like these should be hosted because “they help teachers create celebrations like this.”
