Boys’ JV basketball team makes Diego Rivera history

The boys’ JV Basketball team has made history at Diego Rivera with an undefeated season. Mr. Escobedo, the team’s coach, proudly stated, “I’m Diego Rivera History.”

The team faced 0 losses, 16-0. No team in Diego Rivera history has ever been undefeated. Mr. Escobedo said he was proud of coaching the team through the season.

It was his first year coaching basketball, but getting to know his players wasn’t as hard as it may be for other coaches. “A lot of the players I already knew from last year when I was teaching,” he said.

Of course, with being a coach, you have to observe your players. Each player has their strengths and weaknesses, but some players have come out of their shell this season, he explained. For example, Alan A., a student from Green Design. “He was pretty timid at the beginning,” said Mr. Escobedo, but as they kept playing and winning, Alan became “our best defensive player.”

The JV team destroyed the competition by not only winning but blowing out the other teams. Mr. Escobedo added, “The most difficult school was probably LA High,” with the game ending 47-45. When looking at the scorebooks, two athletes stand out: Curtis W. and Christopher Z., both students from CATS. Mr. Escobedo shared that Curtis and Christopher would go head to head trying to outplay each other on who could make the most points. “Curtis went up with some games” and “Christopher would put up points,” he said.

Mr. Escobedo hopes to continue coaching the JV team and to keep the winning streak they have going. He also shared that he hopes to one day be able to coach at the Varsity level.
