In Los Angeles, California during January 7th through the 11th, teachers were planning to strike against LAUSD if a reasonable agreement was not met.UTLA and LAUSD met every day during January 7th through 11th to get an agreement to happen to avoid the strike. In preparation for the strike teachers prepared their students by giving them information on how things were going to work during the strike.
Diego Rivera administrators organized a number of events to celebrate Black History Month such as having guest speakers in the MPR, and hanging black history posters in the hallways. They also gave the students the option to wear certain colors on a specific day all throughout the month.

No negotiations were able to be made, and teachers are one step closer to going on strike. In January 12 of 2017, UTLA proposed, to LAUSD, a 7% salary raise, smaller classroom sizes, and academic freedom. LAUSD responds to the proposals by denying the raise and classroom size reduction, and accepts only a few academic freedom proposals.
