Celebrating Black History Month at CATS

Black history month is celebrated every February. How does CATS represent the history of African Americans? And, how do students and teachers feel about it?
Mr. Lauren Wilson, a mathematics and computer science teacher here at CATS speaks about Black history month and if this school is covering Black history month correctly. He thinks the school isn’t providing enough about Black history, saying, “At this time, I believe more information should be shared and displayed during Black history month.”

He suggested many topics and themes that could be included, such as reading African American poems and sources from archives, decorating classrooms to fit the tone of Black history month, as well as discussing implicit bias, systemic racism, and social justice, among other things.
Yeshua P., an African American student here and peer leader at CATS thinks differently. He said the school had been capturing the tone of Black history month saying, “We’ve been delving into the history of many Black musicians, inventors and sharing it through all advisories.”
To celebrate Black History Month, Ms. Brigit Escobar, ACE administrator for College and Career, organized two career panels featuring Black and African American professionals who shared about their careers and experiences.
Ms. Brigit thinks that since there are a large number of Latinx students on campus, it’s important to make sure all students can see themselves reflected in the community and curriculum. “We try as staff to create events and spaces to make students feel as represented as possible. We also have an amazing group of Black teachers and staff that can help anyone who may feel out of place, feel comfortable.” She states students should be more open to new cultures, ethnicities and races.
Students have been capturing the history of African Americans through their history and advisory classes. Students attended the panels through zoom.

El mes de la historia negra se celebra cada febrero. ¿Cómo representa CATS la historia de los afroamericanos? Y, ¿cómo se sienten los estudiantes y los profesores al respecto?
El Mr. Lauren Wilson, profesor de matemáticas e informática aquí en CATS, habla sobre el mes de la historia afroamericana y si esta escuela está cubriendo el mes de la historia afroamericana correctamente. Él piensa que la escuela no proporciona suficiente información sobre la historia de los negros y dice: “En este momento, creo que se debe compartir y mostrar más información durante el mes de la historia de los negros”.
Sugirió muchos temas y temas que podrían incluirse, como leer poemas afroamericanos y fuentes de archivos, decorar las aulas para que se ajusten al tono del mes de la historia afroamericana, así como discutir los prejuicios implícitos, el racismo sistémico y la justicia social, entre otras cosas.

Para celebrar el Mes de la Historia Negra, la Ms. Brigit Escobar, administradora de ACE para la Universidad y la Carrera, organizó dos paneles de carrera con profesionales negros y afroamericanos que compartieron sobre sus carreras y experiencias.
La Ms. Brigit cree que, dado que hay una gran cantidad de estudiantes latinos en el campus, es importante asegurarse de que todos los estudiantes puedan verse reflejados en la comunidad y el plan de estudios. “Como personal, tratamos de crear eventos y espacios para que los estudiantes se sientan lo más representados posible. También contamos con un increíble grupo de maestros y personal negros que pueden ayudar a cualquiera que se sienta fuera de lugar a sentirse cómodo”. Ella afirma que los estudiantes deberían estar más abiertos a nuevas culturas, etnias y razas.
