Are you failing any classes at CATS? Well, you are not alone. But the school is trying to reach out to whoever is falling so students can get the help that they need to succeed.
Mrs. Marshay Calloway-Franks, who is the Equity and Intervention Coordinator at CATS, said that “When students fail courses, it may affect their A-G eligibility for college admission.” She explained that “it affects how many credits [students] receive, which impacts if they are able to graduate, and causes them to be further behind.”
But that’s not all, she said. It has other effects, too. “It may also affect their mental health since they may internalize their failures and think it is a reflection of how smart they are.” This means that failing classes has many consequences.
She explained that it’s important for students to show evidence of their learning by doing their assignments. Without this evidence, teachers don’t know what a student learned throughout the year.
Eyon B., a junior, is one of the students that failed some classes last semester. One of the reasons why he failed, he said, was because he didn’t use to turn it work when it was due. But now he’s doing better because tutoring helps him a lot. He did better in school by doing everything they asked him to do. Eyon said “Yeah, I did better and the reason why is because I went to class and did my work everyday.”
When asked about which grade level tends to fail the most, Mr. Victor Dominguez, English teacher, said, “This one is hard, because it’s either the young ones or the seniors. I’m going to say that younger students, like Freshmen and Sophomores, tend to fail their classes because they know that they still have a long way to go.”
He continued saying, “A freshman doesn’t think about senior year because it’s 3 years away.”
“I’ve seen some students pull their grades up from a 5% (F) to a 40% (C) and I’ve seen some who have a 30% (F) and still don’t care enough to do late work even though they’re 10% from passing,” Mr. Dominguez said. “It shows me that students are all very unique in their work ethics.”
If you are failing or have failed a class before, it is important that you attend summer school to make up for those classes or enroll in credit recovery classes.

Continuó diciendo: “Un estudiante de primer año no piensa en el último año porque faltan 3 años”.
“He visto a algunos estudiantes subir sus calificaciones de un 5 % (F) a un 40 % (C) y he visto a algunos que tienen un 30 % (F) y todavía no les importa lo suficiente como para hacer el trabajo tarde a pesar de que están a un 10% de aprobar”, dijo el Sr. Domínguez. “Me muestra que los estudiantes son todos únicos en su ética de trabajo”.
Si está reprobando o ha reprobado una clase anteriormente, es importante que asista a la escuela de verano para recuperar esas clases o inscribirse en clases de recuperación de créditos.
