L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti Comes to Diego Rivera

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti visited the Diego Rivera Learning Complex on Monday, January 24. According to the LA Daily News newspaper, he was on campus to start the Student 2 Student Success Program. The article says that “The effort will provide 1,000 economically disadvantaged students with job skills and work experience at the school.”

Irvin M., 11th grader, said “It was weird to see the mayor of Los Angeles in South L.A. as well, in an area of Diego Rivera with gang violence and many acts of crime within this residence.”

Oscar Z., 10th grader, and his friend even took a photo with him, saying “it was pretty cool.”

Oscar explained how the photo happened. “Me and Frank were walking at that time. I was going to…I’m in wrestling. I guess he thought we wanted to take a picture. I think Frank asked him, and [the mayor] said, “‘You too [join the photo].’”

But Oscar said this wasn’t the first time he had seen the mayor. “I had met him before actually. When I was wrestling for Beat the Streets at the Sheriff’s station, I had won the state championships, and I had met him. He’s the one who put the medal on us.”

Oscar said he didn’t know much about the mayor, but Irvin had many questions for him.  Irvin wanted to ask the mayor about what he would do to help the community and on how he’ll deal with all the homelessness and with other things. 

“In Los Angeles, houses are very expensive,” he said. “To be honest people who earn minimum wage wouldn’t be able to live here, with the house prices rising, and we can see people are moving to Texas.”

So what would Irvin do if he were mayor? 

“If I was the mayor, I would balance out the house prices and gas prices, to where people can afford it, from people who suffer minimum wage to afford these places and houses, since most houses would be overpriced. We can balance these things out, and increase their income so people would be able to buy more things such as food or pay off rent or to pay debts, or to make differences within the community.”

“That’s what I’d do as mayor.”

El alcalde de Los Ángeles, Eric Garcetti, visitó el Diego Rivera Learning Complex el lunes 24 de enero. Según el periódico LA Daily News, estuvo en el campus para iniciar el Programa Student 2 Student Success. El artículo dice que “El esfuerzo proporcionará a 1,000 estudiantes económicamente desfavorecidos habilidades laborales y experiencia laboral en la escuela”.

Oscar explicó cómo sucedió la foto. “Frank y yo estábamos caminando en ese momento. Iba a… Estoy en wrestling. Supongo que pensó que queríamos tomar una foto. Creo que Frank le preguntó y [el alcalde] dijo: “‘Tú también [se parte de la foto]'”.

Pero Oscar dijo que esta no era la primera vez que veía al alcalde. “Lo había conocido antes en realidad. Cuando estaba luchando para Beat the Streets en la estación del Sheriff, gané los campeonatos estatales y lo conocí. Él es quien nos puso la medalla”.

Oscar dijo que no sabía mucho sobre el alcalde, pero Irvin tenía muchas preguntas para él. Irvin quería preguntarle al alcalde qué haría para ayudar a la comunidad y cómo lidiaría con todas las personas sin hogar y otras cosas.

“En Los Ángeles, las casas son muy caras”, dijo. “Para ser honesto, las personas que ganan el salario mínimo no podrían vivir aquí, con el aumento de los precios de la vivienda y podemos ver que la gente se está mudando a Texas”.

Entonces, ¿qué haría Irvin si fuera alcalde?

“Si yo fuera el alcalde, equilibraría los precios de las casas y los precios de la gasolina, donde la gente pueda pagarlo, de las personas que sufren el salario mínimo para pagar estos lugares y casas, ya que la mayoría de las casas estarían sobrevaloradas. Podemos equilibrar estas cosas y aumentar sus ingresos para que las personas puedan comprar más cosas, como alimentos, pagar el alquiler o pagar deudas, o marcar diferencias dentro de la comunidad”.

“Eso es lo que haría como alcalde”.
