On May 13, CATS seniors attended their Decision Day banquet held in the MPR to celebrate their post-high school plans. College decisions are an important moment for all senior students who are about to graduate and even for those who will have to start the process next year. 

Senior Aremy O., who is also the class salutatorian, said the college she will attend will be the University of California, Irvine. She stated the reason she chose UC Irvine is because the school offered her a scholarship that made it stand out from other options. UC Irvine was a school that had already caught her interest beforehand. 

When asked how she felt going to college, she said she’s “excited about the change of environment and the new experiences that come with managing my own schedule.” She plans to major in Cognitive Science. However, Aremy still has some fears about the experience because she thinks she will not be successful, especially that she “will fail every class and be too unaware.”

Brigit Escobar, ACE initiative administrator at Diego Rivera, stated that as of May 15 there were 63 seniors confirmed to be going to a 4-year college or community college. About 40% of this year’s seniors will be attending a community college, which is 37 students. 

“How hard they worked makes me feel an enormous amount of joy,” she said, adding that she’s excited to see what they will accomplish when they leave. A piece of advice she has for the current Juniors is to “Start thinking about your wants,” which will make the application process easier.

Some of the staff members at CATS are also currently enrolled in college. Mr. Rafael Nuila, a teaching assistant who attends Cal State Dominguez Hills, said he chose the school because it invested in its biology department, so it has a better lab space, which goes well with his major of Cellular and Molecular biology. He chose to major in this because of his fascination with science and would like to know how we look and the way we are and fulfill the prerequisites. 

He also said “the commute is not bad.” When asked about how it felt going to college, he said there was a lot of struggles along the way and also talked about how “I’m held back from graduating. Math is also a struggle.” When we asked what he feared and what he was looking forward to,  he said “I fear not graduating by the fall of next year” and what he is looking forward to is “I’m looking forward to graduating and working in a biology-related job.”

Las decisiones universitarias son un momento importante para todos los estudiantes de último año que están por graduarse e incluso para aquellos que tendrán que iniciar el proceso el próximo año.

También dijo que “el viaje no es malo”. Cuando se le preguntó cómo se sintió al ir a la universidad, dijo que hubo muchas luchas en el camino y también habló sobre cómo “me impide graduarme. Las matemáticas también son una lucha”. Cuando le preguntamos qué temía y qué esperaba, dijo “Temo no graduarme para el otoño del próximo año” y lo que espera es “Estoy ansioso por graduarme y trabajar en un trabajo relacionado a la biologia.”
