Review: Demon Slayer brings its elegance, complexity, and personality from TV to the big screen
By Cindy R.
Today I will give my review on the new movie that just hit theaters called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train on April 23rd. This movie was a continuation of the anime Demon Slayer which is about a young man named Tanjiro that begins a quest to fight demons and save his sister after finding his family slaughtered and his sister turned into a demon herself.
Animation & Art Style
The anime itself is very known for its beautiful and well made art styles so the movie already had to live up to high expectations which I believe exceeded them. The movie was absolutely stunning with breathtaking art and the different variety of colors in each character presented set off different personal vibes going according to each of them and you could really see the diligence of the graphics during the fight scenes where the movements and the effects of their attacks/swords really shine. I give this category of the movie a 4.5/5 rating.
Story
The movie starts off right after where the series left off so you are never left out with any little detail. The movie is a transition from the first season to the next season, so it is a necessity to watch the movie before you start watching the next season. The main characters Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke board a train to assist the Flame Hashira Kyōjurō Rengoku in his mission to hunt for a demon that has been slaughtering numerous other demon slayers. Soon after boarding, all of them are enchanted and fall into a deep sleep. Enmu, Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, instructs four passengers, all suffering from severe insomnia, to enter the demon slayers’ dreams and destroy their spiritual cores so that they can’t wake up again. I Don’t want to give out too many details due to spoilers but the plot twists were amazing, and the storyline was clear and understandable for the audience. The comedic elements added helped lighten the mood after a bunch of sad and emotional scenes. And the “dream” concept within the movie helped depict each character’s personality clearly. It truly was very captivating and emotional to the point where you could feel exactly what kinds of emotions those characters were feeling. I would give this category a 5/5 no doubt.
Voice Acting
Now this would be a bit different because the movie was played in both Japanese and in English but I will review it over all. It usually is based on your personal preference like how I prefer to watch it in Japanese. Nonetheless, the voice acting was amazing in the aspect of hearing what kinds of emotion the characters were feeling based on their tone of voice. You could definitely feel the tension during certain parts of the film. Both languages showed great potential and gave the movie a greater impact. With that, I give this category a 4 out of 5.
Overall Thoughts
After critically going over different aspects and categories of which make up the whole movie, I have concluded that the overall rating would be a 4.9/5. This movie is absolutely amazing in all areas and forms to the beautiful artwork to the emotional, and astounding storyline. I highly recommend watching this movie if you are into straight up action and well thought out plot lines.
