Review: Society of the Snow

Review: Society of the Snow

by Xiomara A.

Watching the movie “Society of the Snow” is an example that life is beautiful and it’s worth all the effort we make to live.

The movie, which is based on a true story, takes place in 1972 when a group of Uruguayans who played on the rugby team of the Old Christians club in Montevideo had a flight crash in the Andes mountains, forcing them to become each other’s best friends.

The movie was released on January 4, 2024 by Netflix.

Some of the main characters are Numa Turcatti, Roberto Canessa, and Nando Parrado, whom Enzo Vogrincic, Matias Recalt, and Agustin Pardella play.

So far the movie has surpassed 50 million views since it came out on Netflix.

The story follows Numa Turcatti, the narrator of the movie. This is an important factor about the movie is because even though he was not a member of the rugby team, nor was he a friend of almost anyone on the plane, he quickly became close to everyone and is fundamental for the group’s survival.

This was successful because the director chose him not only to narrate the story of those who survived but also to focus on the deceased who gave their lives for their friends.

An unexpected aspect is the Strauch cousins’ role in this movie: how they played a crucial role in the survival of the Andes plane crash survivors by preparing and preserving food, which was difficult and not everyone agreed to the way they fed the survivors.

Overall, the Strauch cousins were successful because many people agreed and acknowledged the reasons why they did it. This made a big impact and respect not only for their friends but also the audience.

The best part about the movie is Roberto and Nando.

They started the trip because their last friend who passed away in the Andes gave them the strength to go out and look for help; this is how they started their journey until they found a guy who helped them to get out of the Andes.

Overall, this was successful because it impacted on the movie and the audience by seeing how they tried their best to keep themselves alive while looking for help.

The  most unique element of the movie is the soundtrack. The composer Michael Giacchino recreates 2 key points, cold and horror (Leaving Home), through orchestral and composition techniques, and it perfectly accompanies the feeling of terror and desolation experienced by the crew and passengers who had the accident over in the Andes.

Overall, it is important to include that “Society of the Snow” was also nominated for the Goyas in Spain and nominated for the Oscars.

The cast managed to win 12 Goyas for best film, direction, makeup, etc.

But unfortunately they didn’t have luck at the Oscars. They were nominated for best international movie and makeup, but didn’t win.

Over an Instagram Live interview, one of the cast members, Juan Caruso, who plays Alvaro Mangino, answered the writer’s questions about the movie.

He said, in Spanish, “I recommend this movie a lot. It has changed me to be a better person and to value the little things you have and do in this life”

He also said, “We would appreciate if this movie become more recognized since it would have a great impact on many teenagers. It is worth to remember that many of the survivors and the ones that did not survive in the accident were between 18 and 20 years old. One more thing is I love every single one who has supported our movie, and thank you guys.”
