Sophomore spotlight: Emonie’s career goals

By Edward R.

Emonie B. is a sophomore at CATS with big dreams. She wants to go to college, do engineering, and get her diploma.

After college Emonie has her mind set on the career path she wants to go down.

Emonie has two picks for colleges she wants to attend: USC for basketball and Clark Atlanta University for its community vibe.

“Clark is an HBCU, and I would love to be around more people that are like me,” she says.

As for USC, she dreams of playing basketball professionally.

“USC has a great basketball team, I would also like to play basketball for USC, I see a future for myself playing professionally if I could make it that far.”

But if basketball doesn’t work out, she said, “mainly what I want to do is engineering.”

She wants to do engineering because she comes from a family of engineers.

“My family members, they all started by doing that and they made a lot of money from doing it so I want to also do it.”

But there might just be one obstacle in her way of doing so, “me being a female” she said.

“Engineering is a male-dominated field and employers or companies might not want to hire me based on the simple fact that I’m a female but that doesn’t mean I’m any less capable of doing the job than a man.”

If engineering doesn’t work out, Emonie has a backup plan, her own hair boutique.

“I mostly practice with my mom and my friends,” she says, explaining how she is taking steps to ensure her future already.

She even gave a little advice to her future self.

“Stay out of drama, do your work, and just be you,” she said.

Emonie’s journey is about staying true to herself and paving her own way, one step at a time.
