Hundreds of students across the four schools on the Diego Rivera campus walked out of class on Friday, February 7 as part of mass protests in South Los Angeles and nearby in response to President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant policies.
Here are some of the reasons students walked out:
Jimena R., 11th grader
Q: What inspired you to do the walkout?
“Me as a student, I really think we should speak up for our parents who can’t speak for themselves but we’re the next generation to rule the state you know, we have to be like advocates.”
Q: What do you think about the person who made the instagram account promoting the walkout?
“They are very brave. As a person I would love to speak up like that but I get scared sometimes but they’re very brave for that”.

Jimmy R., 11th grader
Q: How did you feel during the protest?
“I was really happy that a lot of the people actually went through with the walkout. It was an important cause.”
Q: What was your reason for walking out?
“I did it for my parents because they’re both immigrants and I just wanna support others who might not have the opportunity they had.”
Q: Do you think it’s brave what everyone did and how we all came together ?
“I think it was brave. It was a good moment, yeah good memories.”
Q: If you were able to lead the protest how would you do it ?
“I wouldn’t. I’m a follower “
Naythan T., 11th grader
Q: What do you think about the walkouts?
“What I think about the walkouts, I think it’s a good movement for students to show what they want, like, it’s like a movement in a way.”
Q: Why are you walking out?
“The reason I choose to walk is because it’s really important to me especially because my grandparents are immigrants and I think it’s good to show support on the cause you know before I did the school walkout I went to downtown on Monday and it was a whole other thing.”
Q: How do you feel about walking out and breaking school rules?
“Before I was informed about it, it was shocking just walking out of school in the middle of the day but apparently students have one day each school year to walk out for like political choices and stuff, so like it wasn’t illegal or anything and the school couldn’t stop us.”
