Teachers react to the new phone policy

By Pascual M.
Teachers have mixed feelings over the new phone policy.
Ms. Liz Martinez, journalism and English teacher, said she is not in favor of the phone policy.
She said, “I think students need to learn to understand how to use them properly. And by taking them away, I don’t think you end up teaching them that lesson.“
Another reason Ms. Martinez is not in favor of the policy is that “as a journalism teacher, I also use, phones in my class. I have students use their phones to be able to record interviews or to, do videos”
Some teachers at CATS have shared how the phone ban can impact student behavior.
Ms. Martinez said “I’m concerned that some students, because they don’t have their phone, which is like a security blanket, that some students will start acting out”.
She does understand, however, that using phones is distracting to students.
Ms. Michelle Suarez, science teacher, also agreed with Ms. Martinez.
She said “I have been against this phone policy since the beginning since they first introduced it, the idea last year.”
She believes it is “a waste of money” and could have gone to something more important, like education.
However, Mr. Noah Kroll, biology teacher, wants to give this new phone policy a chance if it can work out perfectly.
He said, “I’m kind of excited to see how it works. You know, I I think that it has the potential to be really good in that, you know, phones are probably the biggest distraction that students have, in the classroom.”
