Vaccine Mandate for Students Pushed to Fall 2022

While LAUSD teachers and staff are required to be vaccinated in order to be able to keep working at their respected school campuses, the vaccine mandate for students 12 and older has been pushed until fall 2022, according the Los Angeles Times. The original deadline was in January 2022.
Before her term ended as principal, Dr. Gonzalez said that at least 87 percent of the students had been vaccinated. Prior to the mandate being changed in the middle of December, students who were unvaccinated faced having to return back to online learning, unless they had a medical exemption, said Dr. Gonzalez.
City of Angels is currently the main online learning option for students who wish to stay at home or can’t because of medical reasons. “So there are teachers just like when we were doing online instruction that you meet with them during online classes,” she said.
Due to the potential loss of students who were not vaccinated by the deadline, teachers would be reassigned to continue teaching with the City of Angels program.
Dr. Gonzalez was worried about the consequences of this. “So what impact would it have on the students? The fact that there is now a sub in that class and that there isn’t an actual teacher there, and what that does to them instructionally in terms of missing the content they need to be exposed to.”
