Play Review: ‘American Mariachi’

By Jesse M. As the lights dimmed, chills follow as we hear the sound of the violin playing from an ominous character dressed in a black dress who circles the stage before a long, white veil, fastened to the top of the ceiling, drops before the audience’s eyes. The play “American Mariachi” is a culturally important, moving tale that displays beautiful music, beautiful lighting, and deep storytelling. The play written by Jose Cruz Gonzalez and directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela and is playing at the Los Angeles Theater Company from May 2nd to June 9. The

Review: Society of the Snow

by Xiomara A. Watching the movie “Society of the Snow” is an example that life is beautiful and it’s worth all the effort we make to live. The movie, which is based on a true story, takes place in 1972 when a group of Uruguayans who played on the rugby team of the Old Christians club in Montevideo had a flight crash in the Andes mountains, forcing them to become each other’s best friends. Profile: Photography Club

By Hector S. Everyone has a shot at photography – that’s the mission of the first photography club at Diego Rivera. Ms. Martinez, an English Language Development teacher and journalism teacher, started the club this year with the help of EduCare. Ms. Martinez, who taught photography at a Los Angeles non-profit called Las Fotos Project before becoming a teacher at CATS, reached out to Jaime Vega, the senior site coordinator for EduCare before the school year started. She said that she became interest in photography at a young age when her parents bought her a camera.

CATS is a fashion runway

By Gehenna N. In an institution known for its emphasis on communication and technology, being able to communicate through clothes is key. The school hallways reveal a unique interplay of ideas – where fashion becomes more than just fabric; it’s a language of its own.  Everyone needs a way to express themselves, and a group of seniors sure know how. Everyone has their own story, but these three students have something in common: fashion Misa O. has liked fashion since they were a kid. “I would always dress up in crazy stuff when I was little,”

Review: ‘John Wick 4’

By Hermione G. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is the continuation from the most well known franchise “John Wick” starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Ian McShane, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rina Sawayama, and many more. The film follows John Wick in an epic life or death battle against the High Table Global as he tries to seek his revenge (again) on those who left him for dead in the previous film. One of the things that I loved about this film was the action and fight sequences. One of my favorite fight sequences was a battle between

Review: Scream VI

By Hermione G. Scream VI is a horror-thriller film that continues the most well-known horror franchise, “Scream” starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Samara Weaving, Jack Champion, Courtney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and many more. Scream 6 is also now in theaters.  After the murders of Woodsboro happened again, Sam and the other survivors move to New York to start a fresh new start without Ghostface. But soon after they detect that there is another Ghostface brutally murdering others around the Big Apple. The film itself was so much better than the other sequels in

The classroom comes alive: students explore history at Autry Museum

By Ernesto H. and Angel C. As the school bus pulled up to the towering Autry Museum of the American West, the students could feel their excitement building. Little did they know, this field trip would take them on a journey through time, art, and science, revealing a world they never knew existed. Students from Ms. Lopez’s Native American Studies express their thoughts about the museum and what they liked about it. “What I really appreciated about the museum is that it really told an equitable perspective of the American West,” said Ms. Lopez a U.S.

Review: “The Last Of Us”

By Hermione G. “The Last Of Us” is a TV series on HBO Max based on the dystopian video game of the same name starring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and many more actors. This show takes place a few years after 2003 when there’s an outbreak of a fungus that turns people into these zombie-like creatures called the “clickers” or the “infected.” The main protagonists are tasked with a very important mission that could change everything. What I liked about the show was that there were a lot of similarities between the show and

Gifts, gifts, and more gifts

By Maria M., Xiomara A., Magaly G. and Michael Z. A big part of the holidays is giving and getting gifts. Some of the gifts CATS students and teachers gave or got over the winter break included everything from gift cards to socks. Senior Pedro F. said, “For Christmas I got some of my favorite things which are money, gift cards, a candle, a gold necklace and a cup that I had been wanting from Starbucks.” He explained that what makes these gifts special “is the fact that they were given with love, and that makes

What are students’ and teachers’ holiday traditions and superstitions?

By Arely V., Magaly G., Wendy G., and Johana O. While at this point the winter break seems so long ago, there were many memorable moments that CATS teachers and students experienced as they celebrated Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Like many other families, senior Pedro F.’s family opened their gifts in their pajamas on Christmas morning. “I opened gifts in the morning. However I did accidentally ruin the surprise of one of my gifts,” he said. “My sister didn’t get a chance to wrap my gift and I saw it before she could, so I
